SLEEP: BENEFITS OF A GOOD NIGHT REST

Are you getting enough sleep? I mean,  good quality sleep at night? One luxury many in major cities barely indulge in is good, quality sleep due to many factors. This includes the hustle to beat traffic in the morning and at night the inability to get back to our respective homes on time. If you live in Lagos, this is understandable.

In today's evolving world, we are expected to take up many challenges and execute all. We multitask, run multiple businesses and also study while working 9-5. These deprive many of good sleep. A good sleep pattern becomes difficult to keep. Many even brag about not sleeping at night to show they are hardworking and serious about achieving their set goals. *Chuckles*

Well, sleeping at night goes beyond a mere time of rest. It is the period you body does all the hardwork of rebuilding muscles that you have worn out during the day and cleans harmful plaques and wastes out of your system.

Lack of good sleep actually impinges on your ability to make good decisions and reduces creativity. According to the National Sleep Foundation, quality night sleep for an adult ranges between 7-9 hours every night. Hence, the importance of night sleep can not be overemphasized

Below are some of the reasons you should sleep at least 7hours every night:

✓ A good night rest promotes a healthier heart. Poor sleepers are susceptible to heart disease and stroke.

✓ Good sleep improves productivity, creativity and overall performance during the day. It helps maximize problem solving skills.  Some people get to work and after few minutes are seen dozing off at their desk. You can't start the day sleepy and expect optimum performance. It doesn't work, I've been there.

✓Quality sleep reduces your risk of mental health issues such as depression.  According to reports, 90% of people with depression actually complain of lack of/ or poor sleep. People who sleep well tend to be happier and less cranky.

✓ A good night rest improves your immune function and helps fight common cold. Are you susceptible to cold and most importantly concerned about preventing covid-19, sleep well in addition to other preventive measures.

✓ Poor sleep has been shown to affect glucose metabolism in the body and increases Type 2 diabetes risk. Many studies show a strong link between frequent short sleep duration and Type 2 diabetes.

✓ You want a healthy weight? Sleep well at night.

✓ You want a glowing skin? A good night sleep is the secret to glowing skin. Our collagen repairs its self when we sleep. If your goal is a glowing, smooth skin, prioritize good night sleep in addition to a safe beauty regimen.

The road map to achieving good health is nutritious food, exercise and quality sleep. Finding balance and rest while we strive for financial independence and success in everything we do is essential. Of what importance is success and money if we lose our minds and health?

We need to learn time management, be strategic, plan, avoid procrastination, execute plans timely and above all, ensure a good sleep pattern.

    1. The benefits of sleep cannot be overemphasized. Life is tough in Nigeria hence we toil both night and day to get a semblance of good life. But of what use is all work and then poor health when we ought to enjoy the fruits of our labour? It's not worth it!
